01 — Historic Racetrack

A Historic Centre for Equestrian Sport Since 1956

Woodbine opened its Rexdale gates in June 1956, built by the Ontario Jockey Club under the direction of E.P. Taylor as a modern home for Canadian Thoroughbred racing. It replaced a patchwork of older Ontario tracks with a single flagship venue, and within a generation it had become the address every Canadian owner, trainer and breeder measured a season against.

Two racing surfaces define the property. The E.P. Taylor Turf Course is one of the largest grass courses in North America, wide enough to give European visitors the long, galloping turns they are used to, which is why September brings runners from Newmarket, Chantilly and Tokyo to the Rexdale infield. Alongside it, the all-weather Tapeta main track carries the programme through cold mornings and wet afternoons when a grass course would be unplayable.

Two courses on one property: grass wide enough for European visitors, and a surface that never freezes a card out of the schedule.

The atmosphere is unhurried and distinctly Canadian. Families spread out along the apron, exercise riders work in the early light while the kitchens are still setting tables, and the paddock walk before each race stays open enough that a child can watch a horse being saddled from a few metres away. On Plate day the hats come out, the grandstand fills, and the oldest continuously run race in North America is decided in front of a home crowd.

02 — Hotel & Stay

Stay in Elegance: Premium Resort Hospitality

The hospitality district around the racetrack is built for people who arrive the night before a big card and leave the afternoon after it. Rooms face either the final straight or the Toronto skyline to the southeast, and the walk from lobby to grandstand is short enough to make in dress shoes.

03 — Dining & Cuisine

Exceptional Culinary Journeys

Dining at Woodbine ranges from a linen-and-crystal room above the finish line to a terrace where the plates are lighter and the view is the whole back straight. Reserve the club rooms well ahead of a championship afternoon; the lounges keep space for walk-in guests.

Dress code guide

General admission areas are smart casual: clean denim, a collared shirt or a summer dress are all comfortably in place. Club dining rooms and hospitality suites expect a jacket for men and equivalent dress for women, and most rooms ask that athletic wear, beachwear and team kit stay outside.

On championship days the crowd dresses up considerably — hats and tailoring are part of the tradition rather than a requirement. Whatever you choose, wear shoes you can stand in: the walk between paddock, apron and dining rooms adds up quickly.

Racing season days

Afternoon cards typically begin in the early afternoon and run for several hours, with roughly half an hour between races. Twilight programmes in high summer start late in the day and finish under lights, which is the pleasant option in July heat.

Gates open well before the first race so that visitors can watch the paddock, walk the apron and be seated for lunch. Race day schedules are published by the venue and can shift with weather, so check the day before you travel.

Family and group events

The property handles corporate hospitality, banquets and private celebrations, from a table of ten in a dining room to a full suite for a company day out. Group arrangements usually bundle admission, seating and a set menu, and are quoted directly by the venue’s events team.

Families are well served on ordinary weekend cards: open lawn space, unhurried access to the paddock rail and food service that does not require a reservation.

Getting here and parking

Woodbine sits in northwest Etobicoke at 555 Rexdale Blvd, roughly ten minutes by road from Toronto Pearson International Airport and directly reachable from Highways 427, 409 and 401. Ride-share drop-off is at the main entrance.

On-site parking is extensive, with reserved and valet options on major days. TTC bus service connects the area to the Line 2 subway, and journey time from downtown Toronto is around forty-five minutes to an hour depending on traffic.
